When these clubs met in round six, Kerang fought for a 46-38 victory against the Kangaroos on the Blues’ turf at Riverside Park.

Balranald is on the rebound from a five-point loss to Lake Boga.

Key targets in the Kangaroos’ attack include Ben Fuller, Jydon and Matt Neagle.

A key to Balranald’s chances will be its work in defence and through midfield.

The Kangaroos will look for big games from the likes of Jake Helgeland, Ned Lay, Drew and Kobe Lloyd, and Jack Salau.

Kerang has kept winning, but only just.

Lake Boga will start favourite, while the NNWU Demons have the bye.

Swan Hill and Cohuna Kangas are fighting to qualify for finals.

A Swans victory could lift them to the fifth rung should Lake Boga be defeated.

Cohuna Kangas are a win behind Lake Boga, but have far superior percentage.

It will be a miracle, but a Cohuna victory and defeats for the Swans and Magpies would see the Kangas jump to the fifth rung.

It’s a huge match for Swan Hill against Balranald at Swan Hill Recreation Reserve.

Regardless of a win, loss or draw, Balranald has secured a top-three finish and a spot in the qualifying final.

When the Swans and Kangaroos met in round  seven it was Balranald which claimed a 34-point victory on its turf at Greenham Park.

The Kangaroos will be determined to hit back after consecutive defeats to Lake Boga, 55-60; and Kerang, 86-94.

Kerang also did well to recruit experienced ruckman/forward Nic Lang from Kangaroo Flat.

SWAN Hill has brought in former Essendon key defender Michael Hurley to play in Saturday’s fourth round of the Central Murray FNL senior footy action.

It’s a massive coup by the Swans to bring in 194 games of AFL experience to a line-up to take on Nyah Nyah West United at Swan Hill Recreation Reserve from 3.30pm.

Hurley started his career with the Bombers as a forward, but it was his defensive craft which earned All-Australian selection in 2015 and ’17.

Hurley missed all of the ’21 season because a serious hip infection.

He fought back through the VFL and played his final AFL match in round 23 last season.

The Swans are eyeing back-to-back wins in the 3SH-backed competition after beating Mallee Eagles at Lalbert.

Zach Mihocek kicked four goals in the Swans victory.

Ruckman Toby Thoolen who played at VFL level with Collingwood is one of the Swans’ most valuable players.

Swan Hill will also look to Wilhem Bennett, Lachlan Joyce, captain Luke Phelan and Matthew Wade to lead the way.

The Demons from Nyah Nyah West United worked hard to keep the heat on Kerang last round.

NNWU was within 15 points at half-time, but Kerang slammed on six goals in the third on the way to an 82-31 result.

The Demons’ attack includes Charlie Boulton, Riley Daniels and Hassan Ahmat-Watkins.

It will be another big test for Blake Larkings in the ruck.

Nyah Nyah West United will also be keen to see Oliver Boulton, Joel Campbell, Zach Threadgold and Joel Walsh build on last week’s form.

The rematch of 2022 grand finalists Kerang and Cohuna Kangas is another highlight of the round.

The Blues and Kangas meet at Kerang’s Riverside Park from 2.30pm.

It’s been a strong start by the Troy Coates-coached Kerang as it chases more premiership glory.

Kerang marked an 82-31 win on Nyah Nyah West United’s turf last round as Michael Dalrymple and Troy Coates kicked four and three goals.

Recruited from Kangaroo Flat, gun ruckman Nic Lang was best afield for the Blues against the Demons.

A powerful Kerang line-up includes Ryan Gillingham and Bradlee Pay in attack, Martin Kelly in the centre, captain Josh Nitschke, and Sam Heavyside.

Cohuna has the scoring power to test the Blues.

Rhys Free kicked seven goals in Cohuna’s win at home against Lake Boga.

Joel Helman, Sam McGlone, Chris Anderson, Luke Conca and Dylan Johnstone were superb for the Kangas.

Cohuna coach Tyson Findlay will stress the importance of maintaining a high level of pressure in this contest.

The Kangas also have the premiership-winning experience of Tom Metherell and Jarrod Findlay.

After a brilliant win against the Woorinen Tigers, Balranald travels to Barham to take on Koondrook Barham.

The Kangaroos will be favourite to take the points against the River Raiders.

Jydon Neagle kicked three goals and was best afield in Balranald’s second win of the season.

The Roos have jumped to the third rung on the ladder and will be determined to stay there.

Players to watch for Balranald include Ethan Gant, Ben and Ian Fuller, Jaxon and Matthew Neagle.

Koondrook Barham could do little to halt Tyntynder’s charge to a big win at Alan Garden Reserve in Swan Hill.

The River Raiders were within 10 points at quarter-time, but the Bulldogs added 6.3 to 1.2 in the second and 4.3 to 1.3 in the third.

A nine-goal blitz by Tyntynder in the final term completed a 149-39 victory.

Koondrook Barham will look for big games from the likes of Mitch Christensen, Harry Burmeister-Lyons, Jordan Bassett in defence, Lachlan Laursen and Scott Wood.

The KB line-up includes Jacob Barrington, Colin McVeigh and Jack Thrum.

Lake Boga is in the Magpies’ nest at Lake Boga Sports Club to play Tyntynder.

The Magpies are on the rebound from a 46-point loss at Cohuna.

A Lake Boga attack which includes David Gourdis and Angus Monfries was kept in check by the Kangas.

The play of Matt Taverna at half-back, Matthew Payne in the centre, Lincoln Sieben across half-forward, and ruck-rover Lochie Laing will be crucial to Lake Boga marking its third win of the season.

Tyntynder was superb against Koondrook Baraham, but the pressure will be much greater in this match.

Matt Corney kicked a match-high five goals and Liam Whelan added four.

The Bulldogs have Jason Eagle to soar at full-forward.

They will play key roles, along with Patrick Blake and Roy George across half-forward, Elliot Broad and Matt Gilbee in defence.

Tooleybuc Manangatang is at Tooleybuc to take on Mallee Eagles.

The Saints had the bye after a 71-point win at Swan Hill the previous round.

Josh Williams kicked eight goals in that match and will be a huge threat to the Eagles.

Key players for Tooleybuc Manangatang include ruckman Tim Auckland, Tom Carland, and half-back flankers Ethan Goldfinch and Gareth Grant.

The Saints named Rory Alexander at centre half-forward, Luke Walsh in the centre, and Jaicob Kenny at full-back.

Mallee Eagles are chasing their first win.

Brent Macleod kicked four goals for the Eagles.

Mallee will look to ruckman Angus McKenzie, ruck-rover Billy O’Meara, Harrison Allen in the centre, Clinton Cummins, and half-back Ayden Tessari to have a big influence on the contest.

    Woorinen has the bye.

There is plenty of action to preview in Round 9 of the Central Murray, however, first, we would like to highlight some facts surrounding our annual Pride Round.

Statistically speaking, there are likely to be individuals at every club who are impacted by prejudice and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ communities, so we are asking clubs to come together and spread a positive message of acceptance and inclusion throughout our diverse sporting landscape.

The Central Murray and Golden Rivers Leagues believe that, as a community, we should celebrate diversity and inclusion. We are proud to support the LGBTQIA+ community, by bringing awareness to the issues facing our local groups.

Everyone should feel and welcome to play the sport they love and, at our clubs and within the Leagues, we should not discriminate.

Why should you care about celebrating inclusion and acceptance in this year’s Pride Round?

The AIDS Council of NSW 58% of people in the Australian Sporting Sector believe that more effort should be put into the LGBTQIA+ inclusion in sport. This is, in part, due to increasing experiences, and observations of, homophobia, discrimination, exclusion and prejudices within sporting clubs.

Research has demonstrated that a disproportionate number of LGBTQIA+ communities experience poorer mental health outcomes and have higher risk of suicidal behaviours than their peers. These health outcomes are directly related to experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse on the basis of being LGBTQIA+.

    • LGBTQIA+ young people aged 16 to 27 are five times more likely to have attempted suicide in their lifetime.
    • LGBTQIA+ people are two and a half times more likely to have been diagnosed or treated for a mental health condition in the past 12 months.
    • LGBTQIA+ people are more likely to experience and be diagnosed with depression, specifically: LGBTI people are nearly six times more likely; Transgender and gender diverse people aged 14 to 25 are over seven times more likely; Transgender and gender diverse people aged 18 and over are five and a half times more likely; People with an intersex variation are over twice as likely.
    • LGBTQIA+ people are more likely to experience and be diagnosed with anxiety, specifically, LGBTI people are over three times as likely to report having an anxiety-related condition.
    • LGBTQIA+ people aged 18 and over scored a mean K10 (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale)¬ score of 24.3, indicating high levels of psychological distress, compared to the general public mean of 14.5, indicating much lower levels of psychological distress.

MAGPIES TACKLE LADDER LEADERS AT LAKE BOGA

LAKE Boga is the latest team to try and break Kerang’s unbeaten run in Saturday’s ninth round of the 3SH-backed senior footy action in the Central Murray FNL.

The Magpies have home ground advantage at Lake Boga as fifth takes on first.

It’s a well-rested Lake Boga team which had the bye on June 3 and then another rest on a King’s Birthday holiday weekend which featured the stand-alone Swan Hill and Tyntynder match.

A key to Lake Boga’s chances of an upset win against the Kerang Blues will be on-ball and midfield duels.

The Magpies will look to ruckman Jacob Simpson, centreman Tyle Williams, and on-ballers Nathaniel Holmes-Brown and Jake Warren to have a major influence on contests.

Lake Boga has the AFL experience of former Essendon and Port Adelaide player Angus Monfries in attack or across half-back.

Other key players for the Magpies include David Gourdis at full-forward, and Matt Taverna at centre half-back.

In-form players for the Troy Coates-coached Kerang include Michael Dalrymple, Josh Hann, Sam Heavyside and Rylee Smith.

A strong attack for the Blues features Ryan Gillingham and Hayden Hall.

Balranald is on home turf at Greenham Park to take on Mallee Eagles.

A 6-1 record has Balranald in second place nearing the halfway mark of the season.

Those to have starred for the Kangaroos include Ben Fuller, Ethan Gant, Ryan Middlebrook, Jaxon and Jydon Neagle, and Harrison Soraggi.

Huge test for the Eagles who are ninth on a 2-5 record.

Mallee teamed well for a 45-point win against Tyntynder at Lalbert in round eight.

Best for the Eagles in that match were Shaun Harrison, Braidon Bennett, Zac O’Meara and Brandon Gardiner.

Mallee will also look to Ben Bennett, Darcy McGregor and Angus McKenzie to play well in their on-ball roles.

Tyntynder takes on Nyah Nyah West United at Alan Garden Reserve.

The Bulldogs were let down by inaccuracy as they scored 4.12 in last Saturday night’s match under Swan Hill’s lights.

Best for Tyntynder in that match were Matt Corney, Matt Gilbee and Elliot Broad.

The Bulldogs will also look to Jason Eagle, Roy George and Liam Whelan to cap off attacking moves, and for Wilhelm Hawkins and Harry Simpson to defend well.

The NNWU Demons played well to finish within 13 points of Cohuna in Nyah in round eight.

Players to watch for NNWU include Joel Campbell at full-back, Riley Daniels and Charlie Boulton across half-forward, and rover Kayne Davidson.

Koondrook Barham faces Swan Hill at Barham.

The River Raiders are yet to mark a victory this season and will look to Colin McVeigh, Patrick Goble, Mitch Christensen, Dominic Cirillo and Scott Wood to lead the way.

Not an easy task against a Swan Hill line-up which is fighting to gain a place in the top five.

In-form players for the Swans include ruckman Toby Thoolen, Matt Wade, Brandon Houlihan and Xavier Moloney.

Swan Hill also has the leadership of Luke Phelan and Tom Holdstock, and the skilful Jose Miliado.

Woorinen Tigers are at home to play Tooleybuc Manangatang.

The Tigers won their latest match on Swan Hill’s turf by 88 points as Jye Barry, Lachlan Gardner, Will Collicoat and Thomas Isma dominated.

A strong team in yellow and black includes ruck-rover Robbie Miller, Doug Beames at centre half-forward, rover Josh Domaille, and Jye Barry in the centre.

Tooleybuc Manangatang fought back strongly across the last three quarters in the latest home game against Balranald.

The Saints were down 2-38 at quarter-time, but hit back to outscore the Roos, 46-27 in the last three terms.

Best for Tooleybuc Manangatang in that match were Connor McDonald, John Wardle, Jaicob Kenny and Johnathan Marsden.

The Saints have Tim Auckland and Ryan Domaille as key targets in attack, and Tom Carland and Blake Grant in on-ball roles.

    Cohuna Kangas have the bye.

    Len Hutton Memorial ANZAC Match

This Saturday will see Tyntynder host Lake Boga in a special ANZAC match, as Lake Boga are the current holders of the ANZAC Trophy. Due to the innate significance of the two teams playing, the match will be renamed to the “Len Hutton Memorial ANZAC Match” to mark Len’s honour, commitment and dedication to his club, Tyntynder and his local community of Lake Boga and Swan Hill. It is set to be a huge day for all teams with the feature games in both Seniors & A Grade.

One of the lesser-known war memorials in the Swan Hill region is the Commonwealth War Graves at the Lake Boga Cemetery. It is well recognised that No 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot was established on the shores of the lake in 1942, now commemorated by the museum, but the war graves are significant in themselves. For therein lies those who lost their lives while serving at Lake Boga.

Leonard Hutton was born 1/12/1919 in Tasmania and as a child shifted to Lang Lang, Victoria, with parents Leslie James and Anne Muriel Hutton, and sister Verle.

Len was tall for his age (6’1½” on enlisting) and at the age of 14 was playing seniors cricket and also playing football.

In 1938 Len enlisted with the Militia and in December of the same year was allocated to Darwin Mobile Force serving to defend Darwin.

In December of 1940 Len returned to his family in Lang Lang where they celebrated his 21st birthday.

During 1943 Len was commissioned to go to New Guinea with the 2/19 Battalion. Surviving hostilities there, Len returned to Australia to join the permanent military force. He then came to live at Swan Hill as Area Officer responsible for recruiting for the military and was involved in the Lake Boga Flying Boat Repair Depot. Len’s interest in sport continued and he was appointed captain coach of the Tyntynder Football Club and delegate to the Mid Murray Football League.

It was at a game against Nyah that he was playing and is reported to have received knocks to the head, following on from head injuries two weeks earlier. That evening he went home to his wife Elaine and five-month-old daughter Elizabeth, not feeling well. During the night Elaine called on the landlord to assist who called Dr Weaver who then referred him to hospital. Later the next morning Len passed away.

Len was given a military funeral and buried at the Lake Boga War Graves Cemetery.

Following Len’s death an appeal was held and over £200 was raised for Mrs Hutton.

Mrs Hutton and Elizabeth went to live near her parents at Five Dock in NSW.
