Moulamein vs Ultima: Australian Rules, Community, and the Spirit of Country Footy
Australian Rules Football is more than just a sport within the rural towns of Victoria and southern New South Wales—it is a linchpin of community identity, tradition, and pride. Among the myriads of matchups dotting the heartland each winter, few rivalries stir local passions quite like Moulamein versus Ultima. Both teams, steeped in over a century of history, represent more than their jumpers; they symbolise the spirit and resilience of their towns. This is the story of their iconic duels on grassy green ovals, witnessed by generations, and remembered in the stories passed down at local pubs and footy clubrooms.
The Towns: Moulamein and Ultima
Moulamein, nestled on the banks of the Edward River in New South Wales, is a small but proud community. Australia’s oldest inland settlement, it retains the feel of a country town, where everyone knows your name and the footy club is central to social life. The Moulamein Swans, as the club is known, don the traditional red and white and are fierce competitors in the Golden Rivers Football League.
Ultima, a Victorian town perched on the rich agricultural lands north of Swan Hill, mirrors Moulamein’s rural DNA. With a population hovering under 200, Ultima’s sense of identity is similarly intertwined with its football side—the Ultima Kangaroos, sporting blue and white stripes. The club unites the region’s farming families, young tradies, and retirees alike, serving as a vital social hub.
The Rivalry: A Tradition of Hard-Fought Battles
While the precise origins of the rivalry are lost in the mists of time, it is fair to say that Moulamein v Ultima is a fixture that brings out the best in bush football. Whether battling for ladder position, a finals berth, or simply local bragging rights, these games are always played with intensity and heart.
The typical match begins with a sense of anticipation in the air. Cars line the boundary fence, engines idling to keep the heaters on during chilly afternoons. Families unpack folding chairs and eskies, and the smell of sausage sizzles wafts from the canteen. Local volunteers, the backbone of both clubs, man the gate and the scoreboard.
On the field, both teams play a physical and fast-moving style, relying on a blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned campaigners whose bodies bear the marks of many winters. Classic contests between Moulamein and Ultima have often come down to the wire, decided by a single kick or a heroic defensive effort in the dying minutes.
Memorable Matches
The annals of local footy are filled with famous Moulamein-Ultima clashes. In the 1997 semi-final, Moulamein, led by a rampaging midfield, staged a stunning comeback from five goals down at half-time to snatch victory in the last minute, sending their supporters into raptures. Ultima, for their part, exacted revenge in the 2005 Grand Final, prevailing in front of a packed crowd and securing their first premiership in over a decade.
More recently, the 2016 regular season saw one of the most dramatic finishes in recent memory. With Moulamein trailing by two points and the siren about to sound, a wayward kick miraculously found its way into the hands of their full-forward, who coolly slotted the winning goal. These moments become the fodder for spirited debate and storytelling at post-match functions and community gatherings.
The Community Connection
Club volunteers—coaches, trainers, canteen workers, and committee members—are the unsung heroes. Many have dedicated decades to their clubs, ensuring the survival of country football amid changing times and rural population decline. Their efforts keep the Moulamein v Ultima rivalry thriving, season after season.
A Game That Transcends the Field
For players, pulling on the Swans or Kangaroos jumper against their traditional foes is an honour. Success is sweet, but so too is the camaraderie built with teammates and friendly rivals. After the siren, players and supporters mingle over a drink, swapping stories and sharing laughs. Win, lose, or draw, respect between the clubs runs deep.
The Future of the Rivalry
While rural football faces challenges—from drought and economic hardship to shifting demographics—the Moulamein v Ultima rivalry endures. Both clubs actively nurture junior talent, ensuring the next generation has a place on the field. Innovative initiatives, such as joint training sessions and inter-town social events, have helped sustain the competitive yet friendly spirit.
As the towns and their teams look to the future, the annual Moulamein v Ultima match remains a highlight of the local sporting calendar. It is a celebration not just of football, but of community, resilience, and the uniquely Australian tradition of country sport.
In every hard-fought contest, every cheer from the boundary, and every handshake at the final siren, the enduring legacy of Moulamein v Ultima lives on—proof that, in these corners of Australia, footy is truly more than a game.
Moulamein vs Hay: Netball Showdown A & B Grades
Anticipation Builds for a Thrilling Riverina Clash
Final Date Time Home Team Away Team

Preliminary Final 30/08/2025 14:15 Hay A Grade Vs Moulamein A Grade
When the Moulamein Swans and Hay Lions step onto the court this weekend, the air will be thick with anticipation as two of the region’s proudest netball clubs prepare to battle for supremacy. Their rivalry, steeped in tradition and local pride, promises to deliver a contest full of skill, heart, and spectacle.
Background and Season Form
Both Moulamein and Hay enter this matchup with compelling seasons behind them. The Swans have built momentum throughout the year, blending youth and experience seamlessly. Their defensive end, marshalled by their stalwart goalkeeper, has frustrated even the most potent attacks. In attack, their ability to move the ball quickly down the court and capitalise on turnovers has led to a steady accumulation of wins.
Hay, meanwhile, has carved out a reputation for grit and resilience. The Lions have clawed their way back in several tight matches, showcasing a never-say-die attitude that has become their trademark. With a midcourt brimming with energy and shooters who rarely miss under pressure, Hay’s side is more than capable of holding their own against any opponent.
Key Matchups
The battle in the goal circles will be crucial. Moulamein’s sharp-shooting goal attack will test Hay’s defenders, who have proven adept at reading the play and forcing turnovers. On the other end, Hay’s tall, athletic goal shooter will look to use her height advantage, putting pressure on the Swans’ defensive pairing to contest every ball.
Midcourt duels are set to be fierce, with both teams boasting dynamic centre players. Quick feeds, precise passing, and relentless defensive pressure will likely determine which side can control the tempo and dictate terms.
Players to Watch
For Moulamein, keep an eye on the centre, whose leadership and ability to transition from defence to attack could be pivotal. Her connection with the team’s wing attack has been a highlight all season, often sparking scoring runs at crucial junctures. In defence, the Swans’ GK & GD bring experience and composure, consistently nullifying opposition shooters.
Hay’s fortunes may rest on the performance of their agile wing defence, whose interceptions have swung momentum in many games. The Lions’ goal shooter, known for her accuracy and poise, will also be a focal point—expect the GS and GA to command plenty of attention from the Swans’ defence.
Intangibles and X-Factors
Experience under pressure could play a significant role, with both teams having played their share of close encounters this season
Weather conditions and crowd atmosphere could also influence proceedings. A blustery afternoon might test the shooters’ precision, while a raucous crowd could spur the Swans to greater heights—or perhaps, inspire Hay to another famous upset.
Prediction and Final Thoughts
With both teams evenly matched, the outcome may hinge on composure in the dying minutes and the ability to capitalise on turnovers. If Moulamein’s attackers find their rhythm early, it could spell trouble for Hay. Conversely, if the Lions can disrupt the Swans’ flow and convert defensive stops into quick goals, an upset could be on the cards.
No matter the result, fans can expect an intense, high-quality contest that reflects the best of Riverina netball. With the grand final fast approaching, both Moulamein and Hay will be eager to lay down a marker—making this preliminary final one not to be missed.
Predictions
Football – Moulamein by 4 goals
Netball – A Grade by 7 goals
B Grade by 12 goals

The Hot Dog plus Extras Report
It would be remiss of me not to mention, for the final time at Moulamein for the season, the hot dog report.
We maintained the normal hot dog standard, so we gave it a 10.
The extras were pumpkin soup (10) and Scones with jam and cream (10).
A wonderful culinary experience
